Golfers and Tennis Elbow

While many individuals are acquainted with the terms Golfers and Tennis Elbow, there exists a lesser-known understanding of their distinctions. Both tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, and golfer’s elbow, or medial epicondylitis, involve injuries to the tendons connecting forearm muscles to the bone at the elbow, with the “epicondyle” referring to the bony protrusions at the elbow.

Lateral epicondylitis affects the tendons on the outer (lateral) side of the elbow, linked to muscles that extend the wrist backward and straighten fingers. In contrast, medial epicondylitis impacts tendons on the inner (medial) side, connected to muscles that flex the wrist and contract fingers during gripping. Both injuries typically result from repetitive strain on tendons, with forceful motions in golf and tennis making them common. Symptoms manifest gradually and worsen over time for both tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow, as both are types of tendonitis, involving inflammation due to overuse or excessive force.

Tennis and golfer’s elbow share anatomical similarities, with comparable symptoms appearing on opposite sides of the elbow and arm. Common symptoms of tennis elbow include pain radiating from the outside of the elbow, tenderness, weakness in the forearm, and pain during gripping or twisting. Golfer’s elbow symptoms mirror these but occur on the inside of the arm, including pain, tenderness, weakness in the hand or wrist, numbness or tingling in the ring and little fingers, and pain during gripping, twisting, or flexing the wrist.

Both conditions progress from inflammation to partial and full-thickness tears over time. While golfers and tennis players are commonly affected, professions involving repetitive gripping and lifting, such as painters, plumbers, and carpenters, are also prone to these conditions.
